A time travel adventure with an underlying vegan message

As you know, I don’t read a lot of fiction, but I’m so glad vegan author Charlotte Laws reached out and gave me a preview copy of her new vegan book, Elevator People: A Time Travel Novel, published by Stroud House Publishing in 2025.

The book opens from the point of view of beings from other worlds, who argue that the environmental destruction on Earth is causing damage to other planets. Agent Bones is assigned to handle “The Earthling Extermination Project,” which is exactly how it sounds. Some of this initial dialogue reminded me a lot of The Jacksons’ Debate.

Then we go to Earth in present day, where smart homes are normal, and charities still ignore animal rights. A group of people find themselves travelling to a different time and must execute a mission that isn’t explained to them.

I won’t reveal much of the plotline, but I enjoyed this breeze of a read. It includes elements of suspense and sci-fi (I love a good time travel show or movie, so I was into this). There are ideas from fiction trilogy The Shed and nonfiction book Free the Animals I think both nonvegans and vegans will enjoy.

I like the big philosophical idea the book raises, like the butterfly effect: What if we knew that our actions here determined what happens on other planets?

There are some details, like phone booths being more readily available in the future vs. smartphones, but the author touches on an anti-technology movement occurring at some point that might explain this.

I really enjoyed The Elevator People and its message, and recommend it for anyone 12+.

Fun fact: Author Charlotte Laws is a subject in the Netflix documentary The Most Hated Man on the Internet, has been a spokesperson about the Bill Cosby sexual assault/drugging case, and also appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in the late 80s. What a cool vegan woman!
