Drafting marketing emails for Kathrine Snyder’s Shimmering Around the Edges

A fellow vegan marketer, Jessica Lohmann, introduced me to author Kathrine Snyder in 2023.

This was the first book project aside from my own in which I was involved on the marketing side; I had nothing to do with the publishing of Snyder’s memoir, Shimmering Around the Edges.

The marketing project

Her request was very simple. Draft three marketing emails that would go out to three distinct audiences:

  1. People who have OCD, especially people of faith
  2. Professionals who work with people with OCD (and other related conditions mentioned in the book)
  3. A wider audience regarding the broader topics of uncertainty, distress, and confusion, especially faith and existential questions

This was my first time drafting marketing messages, so I should have charged for my time to read the book, but I didn’t. (Noted for next time!)

Snyder had some marketing messages on her website and great endorsements of her book, which made it easy to pull from.

The awesome thing about reading memoirs, my favourite genre, is that I not only learned a ton about the author’s story but also her specific conditions. I’d never heard of Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD) before!

After two rounds of drafts, she was good to go.

She gave me this testimonial to use:

What I learned from the project

This project was a great precursor to book marketing for other authors. It gave me practice in taking the large concepts in a book and breaking them down into marketable messages.

I hired a strategist to come up with 3 out of 4 months worth of daily content for my book, so I did not even do it for myself!
