Book one in the Earthlings trilogy for vegans who want their own Harry Potter

British teacher and bestselling author Ray Star is a fellow Vegan Business Tribe member, and I took up her Veganuary 2025 offer for a free ebook so that I could review it here.

Earthlings: The Beginning is the first of 3 books in her Earthlings fantasy fiction trilogy, originally published in 2021 by Chronos Publishing.

You know I care little for fiction, but this book was an absolute delight to read. A great escape for youth who enjoy fantasy and adults alike, it was refreshing to read a book in this genre that advocates for animals, but not in a preachy way.

What I enjoyed about the book:

• Right off the bat we have humour and writing that sounds like people talk. No Chat GPT language here.
• The preface starts off in the point of view of a 13-year-old boy, then changes to the main protagonist’s—Peridot, a young girl growing up on a farm—for most of the book, but still switches into other characters, keeping things fresh and moving.
• The book takes place in a dystopic future in which Peridot must go on a hero’s journey.
• There’s an equal dose of magic and reality.
• There are references to real activists the vegans will love.
• The conflict in the book arises as a war develops between animals and humans, with some animal species acting as allies.
• The story offers suspense, making the reader want to engage in the subsequent books, Dominion: Earthlings Book Two (2022), and Land of Hope And Glory: Earthlings Book Three, which just came out this year.

I won’t reveal much else as I don’t want to spoil the plotline. The only thing I wish there were more of were more periods to break up sentences instead of commas. Maybe it’s a British thing, but there were way more run-on sentences in this book than I was used to.
