Review of the best videos by vegan companies in 2024’s third quarter
I should probably stop saying “the best videos” because there really aren’t very many videos as is by vegan companies, so it ends up being a list of what I’ve found.
ICYMI:
You know how this goes. Let’s jump to it!
“Wolverine and Deadpool” by Switch4Good
Switch4Good hits it out of the park again, this time using actual clips from the Deadpool & Wolverine movie and AI-generated audio. Yes, it’s using video and music without permission, but they can ask for forgiveness later.
Angela’s Cakes x Slutty Vegan
This collab between Angela’s Cakes and Slutty Vegan gets so much applause and my award for best set dec. This is the kind of effort we need to be putting into all our vegan videos.
“No les mentimos.. les ocultamos la verdad (We don’t lie to you… we hide the truth from you)” by NotCo
I love the energy behind this infomercial behind-the-scenes-style video by NotCo. It doesn’t matter if I can’t understand Spanish.
“Boring Oat Milk” by Boring® Milk
When you can’t come up with a new idea, you can’t beat interview-style videos. Bravo, Boring Oat Milk for going with a boring—but solid—concept.
“Plonts – The Hole-y Myth” by Plonts
I really struggled with even putting this video on the list because I want to applaud the production effort here and even though I didn’t know who Kate Berlant was, Plonts deserves props for the effort. They even changed their website to match the video concept. I just feel this video was too long for most folks’ attention spans online, and you have to have learned the Greek Sisyphus myth to even understand the ad.
I also think we have to stop using 1-800 numbers in ads. Young people do not watch TV and don’t have a clue what that phone number references.
“Welcome to NotCo. We are Not Another Company.” by NotCo
Every company needs an origin video, and this one in English by NotCo’s pretty damn good.
“NotCo te conta a verdade por trás das bebidas ‘proteicas’ (NotCo tells you the truth about its ‘protein’ drinks)” by NotCo
Yes, it’s been a busy quarter for NotCo. This ad’s a play on the ridiculousness of health/fitness foods and beverages. I like how they’re making fun of ads in their ads.
“Monday is Boring” by Boring® Milk
Boring Milk was also busy this quarter. Unlike the other ad, this video bored me so much on first watch I had to watch it twice! Gave me super Office Space x Severance vibes and if you’re going to have the word “boring” in your company name, you gotta just lean into that and they are.
“Casting tape cooking” series by Oatly
Oatly‘s done it again with a series of short, realistic-style videos that seem to cast auditions for an Italian cooking show. I take away points for having animal products in some videos, but at least they’re putting out videos on the regular.
My pick for best video of Q3 2024: “Crush Expectations” by Lurpak
Okay, first of all, what is Lurpak and where was it this whole time? Okay, so it’s not a vegan company (only the product is plant-based) but I love when genres or cultures collide, and this mashup of a heavy metal band rehearsal and cooking show gave me all the feels and shows how badass plant-based ingredients and foods can be. Vegan companies, you gotta USE MORE MUSIC intentionally in your videos!
Have I missed any vegan videos worth mentioning in Q3? HMU!
