Female leaders of the Being Woman retreat
You know those days when you’re in the zone? Things are aligned. Luck is abound. And nothing can throw you off.
In life the only thing that is constant is change so there will be ups and downs. But imagine if you could create a business that is fuelled by purpose. An intentional business that helps foster meaningful relationships, wealth, and wellbeing, regardless of outer circumstances. Master this and everything will consequently align in your favour. I’m still learning how to do this!
This September, my friends Lara Kozan (co-founder of YYoga and Nectar Juicery) and Kate Muker (founder of Conscious Divas) are hosting a heart-centred business retreat called Being Woman. They asked me to answer a few juicy questions about my journey as an entrepreneur.
If you want to master the art of creating a business that is aligned with your values, you need to be at this retreat (details and a promo code for an amazing gift bag is below).
What is your definition of success?
This seems to change over time, but right now success to me is absolute contentment in the value I bring to the world, and loving myself despite failing and what others might consider to be faults or flaws.
Every entrepreneur has those days when she wants to walk away. How do you get out of a funk when you’re feeling demotivated?
I’ve felt this a lot this past year. Talking with loved ones helps to just release the pent up energy of the moment, and I have been remembering a quote that Sandra Yancey, CEO of eWomenNetwork, says often. It’s something to the effect of, “How do you know that right before you decide to quit, the miracle is just about to happen?” I also try and focus on the vision and what impact I want my business to have. The positive effect on others is what’s kept me going so far.
What has been the most challenging aspect of your work?
Definitely communicating our vision and skills to others in a short period of time, face-to-face without being able to have a heart to heart conversation and connecting genuinely. I was just reminded again today about how much work I need to do on my elevator pitch. It’s endless work!
Opportunities are everywhere. How do you choose which ones to snatch up and which to walk away from?
When there is a clear value alignment from someone who needs our services, understands the value, and shares our vision of the world, those are obvious keepers. I walk away from what I call the “carrot-danglers” who promise loads of money but don’t clearly share our values, and there is this empty, seemingly selfish reason why they want to hire us.
How do you make your well-being a priority?
I schedule it in. Running twice a week, yoga 2-3 times a week, eating healthy most of the week (I allow myself sugar/sweets only on weekends) and making sure I don’t work too much. When I get burnt out, I’m not my best self and it makes it hard to connect with others.
How does your business impact your closest relationships?
Connecting from the previous question, it only affects my relationships in the sense that if I let business matters get too stressful or seep too much into my personal time, I end up being an energy sucker and I’m not able to give my time and energy to others. My family and life partner are the most important people to me so I make spending time with them a priority. Sometimes I’ll talk sales with my partner since that is his career and maybe I can pick up some tips; my sister and I have a side business together so even though we are working on the business, we are still spending quality time together. The most important thing is the feeling… it can’t feel like I’m working if I’m with them.
Any last words of wisdom for an aspiring purpose-driven entrepreneur?
It might seem like a hard road and it is sometimes. Find people around you that support you 100% – family, friends, mentors, peer colleagues. They will help you get through the hard times. Also, by creating a business that impacts more than just yourself, you are making your mark in the world. Let those amazing results keep you on fire and driven. I’ve listed a few of the amazing business communities working toward conscious change in the world. We’re a growing minority, but the shift is happening.
