This is an archived blog from when I ran Conscious Public Relations Inc. from 2008-2018. Excuse the potential outdated-ness!
To those who rallied across Canada for climate action: We > Tar sands!
Last weekend I went to Sunset Beach to join the rally organized by 350Vancouver, a subgroup of 350.org, a global climate movement. 350 is the amount (parts per million) of CO2 that we must reduce to – from 400ppm – if we are to preserve a livable planet.
I marked July 4 on my calendar months ago after watching the movie Disruption: Climate. Change. on 350.org. While the Vancouver event was smaller than some others organized in Toronto or Ottawa, there were a good 300+ people there, and it was cool to take part in a human chain of red along the seawall to demonstrate the protection of our coastline and natural landscape from tar sands, which our current government is so invested in. I was also inspired by the young First Nations performers whose voices were so loud and bold and clear – I doubt many adults have the guts to speak for change like that.
Whether your movement is small or large, banding together as a community based on shared values and ideals is a very inspiring and worthwhile endeavour. Margaret Mead wasn’t kidding!
Are you a part of any climate action or social justice movements? If so, how can I help?
