This is an archived blog from when I ran Conscious Public Relations Inc. from 2008-2018. Excuse the potential outdated-ness!
You get two tips today — double whammy!
Thanks to Spin Sucks and PR Daily which have been putting out great shareable content for us, you have two choices.
1. What the heck is PR about? Why do I need to care? Isn’t social media the same or even more effective?
Read PR Daily’s “Has social media changed PR?”
Don’t be fooled by the headline – this article goes deep into what PR is really about, which is where a lot of people need to reset and rethink about. It’s why I had a bit of a career crisis at the beginning of the year when I took offense to the statements about PR being dead. It’s not dead, it’s evolving into being the basis of all business. The industry is just too scared to brand it this way!
2. Don’t give me the jargon. I just want to know what all of my options are. Give it to me!
Read Spin Sucks’s “PR Pros Must Embrace the PESO Model.”
This is a level two article and MANY PR companies don’t get this because they still do the traditional news release outreach without incorporating ALL of the possible PR tools out there. Maybe the P (Paid) doesn’t matter too much to your clients, but the Earned, Shared, and Owned Media sure will. By definition, communicating information that serves public interest IS PR. So if you or your client paid to communicate that information, isn’t that still PR? This is why I say that PR is the new Marketing. We need to either do away with, or re-establish the terms.
Have patience with us while we (the PR industry) work our sh*t out, and enjoy these two great pieces of content.
