This is an archived blog from when I ran Conscious Public Relations Inc. from 2008-2018. Excuse the potential outdated-ness!

Inspired to make 2015 the year Conscious PR goes B Corp!

In late 2012 and the early part of 2013 when Conscious PR was just getting ‘out there’ in the world, I worked with a great mentor, Dawn Bowles, who showed me the who’s who in social venture and the groups I needed to network with if I was to align with my ideal clients.

I became familiar with B Corporation in 2012 when Madeleine Shaw of Lunapads led a session for Forum for Women Entrepreneurs (FWE) on triple bottom line businesses. It seemed something that was out of reach until I became Conscious PR and was connected by Dawn to Stephanie Ryan, the Community Manager for the Pacific Northwest region of North America.

I had the pleasure of meeting Stephanie at last night’s panel put on by the Public Health Association of BC (thank you Paola Ardiles!). It was as if my journey came full circle, as earlier this year I had finally sat down and completed B Corp’s Quick Assessment to see where we stood – and we had not yet reached the 80/200 point minimum. I again put it aside as something to strive for when my company gets ‘bigger.’

Lunapads, Left Coast Naturals, and Mills Basics are only 3 companies in BC that are B Corps, but they are paving the way and showing people like us how to walk our talk. I can talk all I want about ethical PR and sustainable business but unless I am putting Conscious PR up against standards that other service firms can adhere to, I’m just doing a lot of talk. Which is why I’ve now set the resolution to either have Conscious PR become a B Corp. or at least take steps to becoming one.
