Surrendering and welcoming what comes

A bunch of people (mostly women) on my social media feeds have been talking about surrendering to the flow of the Universe and accepting what is – and I have been thinking a lot about what I’ve learned this past year or so about putting into action the change that I want to see in myself and the world. So where does the balance occur?

For many years the hardest part about my job was not actually delivering results for clients, but in getting them. I did all sorts of marketing but it wasn’t until about 2011 when I started to track how I was getting clients. I finally realized that word-of-mouth was what was getting me work instead of spending time on social media, networking events, and cold e-mailing or calling. But I did get great work from that too.

I also resisted a lot in working with staff and building my team because I believed that only I could represent my brand and that only I could do the work that I do for clients. I was wrong. My trusted Mastermind colleagues challenged me at the end of last year to take the leap and see what it would be like to work with an intern for the first time. And boy did I realize what a help that would be — so much that it freed me up to welcome the surge of work that came this year.

For the first time in my business – and life – I feel that it is not a struggle. Life just is – we can’t put these good and bad labels on it. There are things we can do to create change and move in a direction, but after that effort we must sit back and assess the results so we know what or how to change, or how not to. I feel like I am just starting to look at 6.5 years of work and the results that is yielding. Sure, I’m not able to sit in a hammock between palm trees on Miami Beach while I watch, but it feels damn good to be welcoming in success. Whether in the highs or the lows, that is the flow. Accept it.
