On the emotion of anger
I had a strange dream last night that I was screaming at my little brother. It was almost from memory, as I remember being that way a lot when I was younger. These are probably my least favourite moments in life, which is why I wondered why they were coming back to me.
I watched the movie BOYHOOD last night which was an extraordinary feat of a film that took Richard Linklater 12 years to make with the same cast. As I was watching it I found myself wondering why anger and suffering and sadness are so common in our lives. We don’t want those feelings, so why do we choose to stay in them?
I would rather be sad than angry, but I still find myself angry at many things that go on in the world, most of them involving the unnecessary deaths of others, or at people who choose apathy over action. I wondered if the most enlightened gurus that are alive now feel anger in any way. It shows me that I still have lots of self-work to do when I choose to involve myself (emotionally) in things I cannot control.
Each of us has an amazing capacity to change the world. Just yesterday I received the most heartwarming call from a client – the first in a while – in which she thanked me for the work I was doing and expressed her excitement over the results of working with my company in the span of just over a week. It reaffirmed the fact that just a few people working together with a common goal can change the world. There is no need to be angry, anytime, unless it is what fuels action out of love. It IS possible to change the world, a few people at a time.
Are there emotions that you hold back that no longer serve you?
