Putting my values into action
This one is going to be hard to explain since I don’t want to name names or relay the details of the situation.
Case #1: I don’t agree with a company’s marketing approach. Initially it seemed we shared common goals, but we all act based on our value system. It’s clear now that our values do not align, and so I have to make the decision between earning money or following my ethics. I’m choosing to do the latter.
Case #2: A company calls me to offer a package for clients that I don’t necessarily believe in. It’s an interesting approach to doing business, and might work well for many marketing companies and their clients, but it rubs me the wrong way. Essentially it promises results without delivering them. I say I’m open to the idea, but I’m not sure it’s something I’ll ever recommend to my clients in the future.
It’s hard when you do not agree with others’ methods, as it seems counterproductive to working together or building community. But in the end it’s important to know that we are acting on values, no matter what those are for each of us. It feels slightly uncomfortable for me, but I feel solid in these decisions and I trust that my company and clients will be better off because of them.
