Learn from peeps in your circle

Just this past week, I recommended two people to join or go to an event put on by the Canadian Public Relations Society. Lots of people are interested in my industry, but don’t know who to talk to about getting a job or learning about the field outside of taking a program.

I wonder if they teach networking in business or communications programs, because the #1 tip that should be taught is to hang out where your peeps are. For PR peeps, CPRS is it. For marketers in general, BCAMA, IABC, and more depending on your niche within Marketing. Please, please tell fresh grads to look for and join their industry associations before they graduate so that they can start networking with people in the field. They get the chance to learn about opportunities, and you get the chance to teach and possibly even hire. I recruited my upcoming Coordinator at the UBC Marketing Association‘s annual Gateways event.

I missed The Art of Marketing Conference yet again as well as the Canada Marketing Summit, but industry events and conferences are also a great way to learn from experts in the field and also converse with fellow pros.

April is Social Enterprise month, and you can read yesterday’s blog about the events going on in the Social Enterprise arena, including SVI Women later this month and Net2Van’s The Digital Nonprofit on May 9. This is the reason why I may not see a lot of you at these events – it’s impossible to cover them all!

The LOCO BC ladies have seen me around enough so much that they featured me on their blog last Monday! That’s right y’all, PR begets PR!

Now go and hang with your peeps!
