Ethics in Marketing

I talked a lot this week about ethics in the media and it made me think very deeply about my profession. I believe I have acted ethically throughout my career, but I was led to think about how the media industry works in general. Obviously to keep an outlet going, businesses must pay for ad space or even invest in the outlet itself – which may lead to some influence in what the outlet can or can’t report on. Even though I play a small part in what stories get published or told, am I still not a cog in the “machine?”

I am not going so far as to shut down my business because of it but it provides some great food for thought. Also, we are living in a great time where media is being overhauled by the Internet and the availability and accessibility of information there. People no longer have to tune in or read papers to know about breaking news. I get most of my breaking news from Twitter or blogs now. It will only be a matter of time before the outlets that have relied on big business are forced to remodel. It’s happening already, and my hope is that there is room for truth telling and the telling of all types of stories, not ones that are simply based on danger, bad behaviour, or fear.

Good business

I’m reading a book by Fast Company Magazine’s William C. Taylor called Practically Radical. It’s a great read and super inspiring, a lot like Richard Branson’s Screw Business as Usual, only it goes deeper into case studies of real American companies. It made me feel that even though I am a different kind of publicist or running a different kind of PR company that I am a leader of some sort.

I also learned recently about a new site called Common.is that is going to be like an online marketplace for change-making consumers that want to buy from change-making businesses. They are accepting business submissions until November 15th, so if you or someone you know fits the bill, apply online. It took me about 10 minutes to complete.
