PR and SEO
I had a fascinating conversation yesterday with Laure Sabini, website optimizer for Laurizon. I have a lot of respect for SEO experts because just like with PR pros, there is a misconception about what SEO experts do: get one’s site to the first page of Google, fill your site with keywords… yadda yadda yadda. Whether or not that is true, it’s what I think is out there.
I’ve always known that one of the best ways to get traffic AND raise your rankings is to get other sites to link to yours. I discovered in our conversation that now one of the major ways to get optimized is not just what you do on your own site (and no, press releases are NOT meant for SEO), but rather what other sites (and social networks) are saying about you, and how much dynamic content you have. Which is why it’s so important to get reviews and the media (who all have websites now) to talk about your business. Sounds a little bit like PR right?
I told Laure how everything in business is moving online, but that it baffles me why local businesses in my old hood still needed convincing on why a website was important. I mean, would Earnest Ice Cream have been as successful if they didn’t engage with people online and told them they were opening a retail shop? Would a good number people still have talked about their amazing ice cream if they had only told family and friends? Would they have had a line out the door on opening night?
This is why I blog daily, and it’s not all about PR because I am about other things too.
Happy content building! And a bonus video for you:
