Since today is supposed to be one of the warmest days of the month, I thought I’d blog about access to something we in the developed world take for granted: light. My jaw dropped when I read a stat that 1.5 billion people in the world do not have readible access to electricity.
GOOD did an article on how crowdfunding could unlock an off-grid solar revolution. Places like India and East Africa are developing solar companies, but the biggest barrier is access to finance. SunFunder exists to try and solve this problem by allowing investors to provide working capital loans to solar companies.

I had the privilege of virtually meeting one of the staff at Uncharted Play (now Uncharted Power) in New York City, who is launching their energy-harnessing soccer ball, the SOCCKET, in Canada today. VP Business Development Melissa Seligmann and VP Operations Alison Dalton Smith will be presenting the SOCCKET after tonight’s Opening Film Kicking It at the Projecting Change Film Festival, which runs until the 28th.
It’s a great device that people of all ages can use recreationally, and for light – 30 minutes of play provides 3 hours of light when connected to an LED lamp. Uncharted Play is also working on a portable lamp and a unit that can charge a cell phone.
