This is an archived blog from when I ran Conscious Public Relations Inc. from 2008-2018. Excuse the potential outdated-ness!
I tend to win things. And I’m not particularly proud about it, it’s just something that happens. And I am grateful when I do. Last night at Vertality 3 I won a Greenster coupon book, formerly known as the Green Zebra book. Along with coupons, there are some great tips, recipes, DIYs and articles. One of the articles is “7 Facts About Sustainability You May Not Know” and I certainly did learn some things during my bedtime reading, which I’d like to touch on today as I go through some of the tips.
1. It has an official definition
The UN defined it in 1987 as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.“
We tend to think about the term as relating to the future of the earth, while it’s really the future of everyone.
2. It’s not just about the environment
I touched on this in the point above – “reaching equilibrium between people, the environment and the economy.“
3. It’s not a synonym for “green”
This is an a-ha, so I’ll just quote it entirely:
“Green makes reference to the organic over the artificial, which serves beneficial to the health of the environment and mankind. However, with global population growing at an accelerating rate and large segments of the population achieving higher standards of living, it is impossible for everyone to have an equitable way of life without technologies like electric cars, wind turbines, efficient appliances, and other inorganic technologies.“
Yes, my friends, TECHNOLOGY IS GOOD!
4. It’s more than just recycling
5. It will save you money
Leo might argue this as he’s just traded his hybrid in for a compact car, but I have to admit, ever since becoming nearly vegan I know I’ve cut down on my grocery bill… though if I ate more local produce I might even it out. It’s hard to do the right thing sometimes!
6. It will enhance your lifestyle
I agree with this one – I feel better when I shop local, buy more eco, and then see these things in my home when I use them or consume them. It’s become a part of my lifestyle, and I know I’m doing my part.
7. It’s easy to get started
One step at a time! One way is to purchase the Greenster book online for $29. I’ve seen it around at other retailers too.
