This is an archived blog from when I ran Conscious Public Relations Inc. from 2008-2018. Excuse the potential outdated-ness!

Today I had the privilege of seeing Arlene Dickinson, Entrepreneur and Author most known for her role as investor on CBC’s Dragon’s Den, and CEO of Venture Communications in Toronto.

I haven’t read Dickinson’s book Persuasion before, so I didn’t know much about her personal life except for the fact that she wears amazing heels and is a grandmother. So it was so interesting to hear how her personal experiences have shaped the person she has become and the way she operates in business.

Dickinson is a believer in values in business and said a few words about the role of triple-bottom-line businesses in the future. It reassured me that I have real power in what I have created with Conscious PR. Though I have big dreams for the brand, as a business it is important to support the bottom line: making money. Without it, the business cannot function. Also I am becoming more confident in the personal pieces that I am putting out there, because – as Dickinson put it – what benefit is there in hiding your story?

Thank you to UBC Alumni Affairs, UBC Sauder School of Business, and Scotiabank for putting on the event and making it accessible for those of us who attended.

Thank you to Sue Dickie of Wear Those Deals for the blog idea.
