A great Q&A column in this month’s Alive Magazine answered a wife’s questions about whether lifestyle choices can help avoid cancer. Her husband thought she was crazy. Ha, I think not! Cancer is a serious thing and these choices aren’t magic pills nor quick fixes but anything you can consciously do is worth doing when it comes to preventing a serious health condition.
Dr. Joe Schurr answered that important choices include the following:
- being as lean as possible within the normal range
- keeping physically active for at least 30 minutes per day (equivalent to a brisk walk)
- eating at least five servings of a wide range of non-starchy vegetables and fruits daily and including unrefined grains and/or legumes daily
- increasing dietary fibre intake
- limiting intake of red meats and fast foods and avoiding processed meats
- avoiding salty foods, sugary drinks, and exposure to moldy foods (aflatoxins)
- limiting alcohol intake
