This is an archived blog from when I ran Conscious Public Relations Inc. from 2008-2018. Excuse the potential outdated-ness!
I was fortunate to attend a Burnaby Board of Trade event to hear James Hoggan speak about his most recent book, Do The Right Thing. I had wanted to read the book for a while but didn’t get around to it, and then was convinced by my friend Lesley Chang to attend. Jim’s talk wasn’t long but it was a great refresher on the basics and principles behind good PR – for any business. The advantage of going to an event like this is that it’s not a talk just for PR or Communications people and a rehashing of practices we already know. Though it’s a line used before, the title of Jim’s book reminds us of the core of PR and why we want to help companies develop relationships with their publics – it’s to communicate messages but also to ‘set the record straight’ and try to practice business as ethically as possible.
Jim signed my book with the message “Celebrate the right things you do” and it’s great to be reminded of this on a professional level but also on a personal one. My year and a half working in my own business has been a challenge but a very rewarding experience, knowing that I am getting closer to completely loving “what I do” and I know that satisfaction carries onto my personal life.
